Eisenhower Elementary | Kindergarten

My name is Kim Mertens.  I grew up in Colorado Springs, Co and graduated from Harrison High School in 1981.  In 1986, I received my Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Elementary/Special education from Hastings College.  In 2005, I went to UNK to complete an Endorsement in Early Childhood Education and in 2013, I completed my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Doane.

After graduation, I taught K-6 Resource at Juniata Elementary in Juniata, NE.  Once my husband and I began a family - I chose to stay at home and raise our three girls for 10 years. In 1997, I returned to teaching at Kids First Preschool where I taught ⅘ year olds for 8 years.  In 2005, I was hired to be one of NPPS Literacy Coaches and enjoyed that position for one year - before returning to the classroom as a Kindergarten teacher at McDonald Elementary.  I stayed at McDonald from 2005-2016 and in 2016 became an Eisenhower Eagle.

I have been married since 1984 and Tom and I have three terrific young women to call our daughters.  Our oldest daughter teaches kindergarten in Kearney, NE, Alyssa is a Physical Therapist at Sandhills Physical Therapy in North Platte, and Alex our youngest is in Lincoln working for Nature’s Variety Pet Food Company.  We enjoy having the girls all so close and spend as much time as we can together.

I love animals and include them as part of our family. We have two dogs - Daily and Tallie, two cats –Vega and Shasta, and four horses –Spy, Stuart, Truman, and Kate.  They keep us busy now that our girls are gone.

I have always felt fortunate to be part of children’s lives as they are beginning their educational journey.  I believe each child has a unique learning experience and I love discovering new ways to help students learn and enjoy their school experience.
