North Platte High School | Special Education

My name Amy McBeain and I am a Special Education Teacher at North Platte High School.  I am a California native that has had the opportunity to move around and finally settled in North Platte Nebraska in 2010.  My Husband, Tyler McBeain, works for Nebraska Department of Roads.  Together we 4 children between the ages of 8 months and 13 years old.  We enjoy going on trips to the Omaha Zoo, Denver and visiting family in Colorado when we are able to.

I attended Rialto High School in Rialto California and graduated in 2000.  From there I went on the attend Chaffey Community College where I received my Associate of Arts in General Education in 2003.  After that I attended California State University San Bernardino and graduated with my Bachelors of Arts in History with an Emphasis in United States History in 2007.

After my Graduation from CSUSB I worked for a trucking company, Knight Transportation, and I was able to move a lot living two years in Salt Lake City Utah and a year in Phoenix Arizona.  I decided in 2010 that I was ready to be close to my family, who had moved to North Platte in 2007, so took a leap of faith and made the move to Nebraska.  When I moved to North Platte I gained employment at Walgreens Drugstore and worked there for 5 years as an Assistant Manager.

In 2013 I decided that I wanted to pursue my true passion of teacher and began the Transition to Teaching program through University of Kearney- Nebraska.  During this time, I spent a lot of time at North Platte High School doing observations and then completed my student teaching at Adams Middle School.  I received my teaching certification in May of 2015 from UNK.  In the summer of 2015 I decided that I was not done with my teaching education and decided to pursue a teaching certification and Master's Degree in Special Education.  During the 2015-2016 school year I was a long term substitute for North Platte High School and Adams Middle School and also substituted for Brady, Hershey and Sutherland Public Schools.  In 2016 I was hired as a Special Education Teacher here at North Platte High School.

I believe every student can learn and that each student should be given the opportunity to do so.  My job is to change things up sometimes and make learning not only powerful but also fun.  As a teacher the best moment for me is when I know that a student is struggling but asks for help so they can understand, and then seeing how excited the student is when they finally have that lightbulb moment.  Teaching at North Platte High School has given me the opportunity to be able to work towards this vision.
